The Massey Ferguson 165 was launched alongside the 135 and 175 at the 1964 Smithfield Show as the mid-size step-up in Massey Ferguson's new row-crop lineup, built around a larger four-cylinder Perkins diesel. It was also offered with Continental and Perkins gasoline engines, giving buyers unusual flexibility, and was one of the most common tractors on British and Commonwealth farms through the 1960s and 1970s.

History

Introduced in 1964 as part of the same generation that brought the MF 135 and 175 to market, the Massey Ferguson 165 slotted between the two as a row-crop tractor with more displacement and power than the 135 while remaining lighter than the 175. Its four-cylinder Perkins diesel, tested at Nebraska as Test 896, delivered a useful step up in pulling power for medium-size farms.

Beyond the standard diesel, the 165 was also built with Continental and Perkins gasoline engines for markets and buyers who preferred spark-ignition power, documented in separate Nebraska tests (898 and 1008). Riding on the same basic Ferguson-system hydraulics and chassis architecture as its 135 and 175 siblings, the MF 165 became a familiar sight on British, Commonwealth, and export farms throughout its long production run into the late 1970s.
