The Fordson Model N was the successor to the pioneering Model F, produced from 1929 to 1945 first at Cork, Ireland and then at Dagenham, England. A refined and slightly more powerful development of Ford's mass-production tractor formula, the Model N became the mainstay of British mechanized farming through the 1930s and played a vital role in the wartime 'Dig for Victory' food-production campaign. Over 136,000 were built at Dagenham during the war years alone.

History

When Henry Ford moved Fordson production out of Dearborn, the Model N emerged as an evolution of the Model F, gaining a larger 267-cubic-inch four-cylinder engine, higher-voltage ignition, standard rear fenders, and — from 1933 — the option of pneumatic tyres. Manufacturing began at Cork, Ireland in 1929 before relocating to a new plant at Dagenham, England in 1933, which became the heart of Ford's European tractor operations.

The Model N dominated the British tractor market in the 1930s and became indispensable during the Second World War, when the Dagenham factory built more than 136,000 units to mechanize wartime agriculture. A power take-off became available as a factory option from 1935. By 1945 the Model N had been superseded by the more advanced E27N Major, but it had firmly established Fordson as the dominant tractor brand in Britain.
