The Fordson Major, designated E27N, was Ford's postwar successor to the Model N, built at Dagenham, England from 1945 to 1952. It was the first Fordson to offer a factory three-point linkage, power take-off, full electrics, and an adjustable-width front axle, marking a major step toward the modern all-purpose tractor. From 1948 buyers could specify a Perkins P6 diesel engine in place of the original Ford petrol/TVO unit.

History

Introduced in March 1945, the E27N Major retained the proven 267-cubic-inch four-cylinder Ford engine and three-speed gearbox of the Model N, but housed them in a new casting and added the features farmers increasingly demanded: a rear power take-off, factory hydraulics with three-point linkage, an electrical system, and an adjustable front track. This made the Major far more versatile than its predecessor.

From 1948, customers could order the tractor with a Perkins P6(TA) six-cylinder diesel producing around 45 hp, giving the Major considerably more pulling power and better fuel economy — an early and influential example of diesel adoption in British agriculture. The E27N Major sold strongly across Britain and export markets before being replaced in 1952 by the entirely new, purpose-built New Major (E1A) with Ford's own diesel engine.
