The John Deere Model D, introduced in 1923, was the company's first tractor built and sold under the John Deere name, and it went on to enjoy the longest production run of any Deere tractor, staying in the lineup for 30 years until 1953. A rugged standard-tread machine powered by Deere's signature horizontal two-cylinder engine, it evolved continuously over three decades, growing from a 465-cubic-inch engine turning 800 rpm to a 501-cubic-inch unit at 900 rpm and later receiving Henry Dreyfuss styling in 1939. Beloved for its simplicity and durability, the "spoker" and later Model Ds became icons of early American mechanized farming.

History

The Model D grew directly out of Deere's 1918 purchase of the Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company and its Waterloo Boy tractors. Launched in 1923, it was the first tractor to wear the John Deere name and established the horizontal two-cylinder engine layout — nicknamed the "Johnny Popper" for its distinctive slow exhaust beat — that would define the brand for the next four decades. The earliest examples, built through 1925, are known to collectors as "spokers" for their spoked flywheel.

Over its exceptionally long life the D was refined again and again. The engine grew from 465 to 501 cubic inches in 1927 as the bore was enlarged and the rated speed rose from 800 to 900 rpm; a three-speed transmission replaced the original two-speed in 1935; steel wheels gave way to optional rubber tires in the mid-1930s; and in 1939 the tractor received the streamlined sheet-metal styling designed by Henry Dreyfuss. Orchard, industrial, and crawler-adapted variants broadened its appeal.

By the time the last Model D was built in 1953 — famously assembled from a "streeter" run of leftover parts outside the normal production line — it had been in continuous production for 30 years, the longest of any John Deere tractor model. Its blend of brute simplicity, long service life, and historical primacy as Deere's first tractor make it one of the most significant and sought-after machines in the company's history.
