The Ford 2N was a wartime variant of the groundbreaking 9N, produced from 1942 to 1947 when steel and rubber rationing limited the materials available for farm equipment. It carried forward the 9N's Ferguson-system three-point hitch and hydraulics, often riding on steel wheels early in its run before rubber tires became available again. Mechanically similar to the 9N, it was eventually succeeded by the improved 8N in 1947.

History

Introduced in 1942, the 2N designation largely reflected wartime production realities rather than a major engineering revision of the 9N. With the United States now in World War II, the War Production Board restricted the use of rubber and other materials, so many early 2N tractors left Dearborn on steel wheels, and features like a starter and rubber tires were sometimes fitted only when parts allowed or as government-approved options for farmers who could justify the need.

Underneath the wartime austerity, the 2N retained the 9N's revolutionary Ferguson three-point hitch with draft control, a system that had already transformed how implements were attached to and controlled by tractors. Production continued through 1947, when Ford's split from Harry Ferguson led to the redesigned 8N. Today the 2N is prized by collectors partly for its wartime story and the variety of steel-wheel and transitional configurations it was built in.
