Ford Motor Company, founded by Henry Ford in 1903 and headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan, had already built tractors under the separate Fordson brand starting in 1917. In 1939 Ford introduced the 9N under its own name, notable for pioneering Harry Ferguson's three-point hitch system; the 9N, 2N, and 8N that followed through 1952 became some of the best-selling and most enduring tractors in American history. Ford's agricultural line continued for decades until 1986, when Ford acquired Sperry New Holland and rebranded its farm equipment business as Ford New Holland; Ford sold its stake to Fiat in 1991 and the Ford tractor name was fully retired in favor of New Holland.
