International Harvester was formed in 1902 when the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company, Deering Harvester Company, and three smaller manufacturers merged in Chicago. IH introduced the Farmall in 1923–24 as a compact, general-purpose row-crop tractor with a narrow tricycle front axle and high ground clearance that let one machine plow, cultivate, and harvest — the design became so dominant that "Farmall" served as IH's primary tractor brand for decades. Weakened by labor strife, recession, and heavy debt, International Harvester sold its agricultural equipment division to Tenneco's J.I. Case in 1985, merging the two lines into Case IH and retiring the Farmall name.
