The Farmall Super A was International Harvester's upgraded one-plow row-crop tractor, built from 1947 to 1954 as the successor to the Farmall A. Its offset engine and operator seat kept the driver clear of crop rows for precise cultivation on small farms and market gardens. The Super A introduced IH's new Touch-Control hydraulic system, a live-action lift that replaced the earlier Lift-All setup and became a signature feature across the company's postwar lineup.

History

IH introduced the Super A in 1947 as a running update to the original Farmall A, keeping the same distinctive offset layout — engine, seat, and steering all shifted to one side of the tractor's centerline — so a single operator could see cultivated rows without straddling them. The C-113 four-cylinder engine carried over largely unchanged aside from a small compression bump, but the real news was underneath: a stronger rear end and, starting in 1947, the new Touch-Control hydraulic system for finger-tip implement lifting.

The Super A found a loyal following among truck farmers, market gardeners, and small-acreage operators who valued its tight turning radius and single-row visibility over raw horsepower. It remained in production through 1954, when IH replaced it with the Farmall 100, part of the broader shift to the numbered series. A high-clearance Super AV variant and the related Super C (a tricycle-front version of the same basic tractor) extended the platform across several niches within IH's small-tractor family.
