Scottish immigrant James Oliver founded the Oliver Chilled Plow Works in South Bend, Indiana, in 1855, patenting a chilled-iron plow process prized for its durability. The Oliver Farm Equipment Company was formed in 1929 through the merger of Oliver Chilled Plow Works, Hart-Parr Tractor Company, American Seeding Machine Company, and Nichols & Shepard, and its green row-crop tractors became known for advanced styling and strong performance. White Motor Corporation acquired Oliver in 1960 and continued tractor production under the Oliver name until 1976, when the line was absorbed into White Farm Equipment.
