The Allis-Chalmers D19, introduced in 1961, was the company's largest D-series row-crop tractor and is historically famous as the first production farm tractor to come factory-equipped with a turbocharged diesel engine. The turbocharged 262-cubic-inch six delivered roughly 67 PTO horsepower with better fuel economy than a comparable naturally aspirated engine, pioneering a technology that later became universal on farm diesels. It was offered in gasoline, LP-gas, and turbo-diesel forms.

History

The D19 arrived in 1961 as a new flagship positioned above the D17, giving Allis-Chalmers a larger row-crop machine of roughly 66 to 71 horsepower in gasoline, LP-gas, and diesel forms. Its landmark feature was the turbocharged D-262 diesel: Allis-Chalmers engineers fitted a Thompson turbocharger running a modest four-to-five-psi boost, making the D19 the first production tractor to offer factory turbocharging — a genuine industry first that raised power and efficiency without a larger, heavier engine. All three fuel variants were tested at Nebraska in April 1962 (Test 810 gasoline, Test 811 turbo-diesel, Test 814 LP-gas).

The D19 kept the D-series hallmarks — Power-Director hand clutch, Snap-Coupler hitch, Traction-Booster hydraulics, and power-assist steering — while adding a paper air filter that Nebraska first documented on this tractor. It was a relatively low-volume model, with roughly 10,600 built through 1964, but its turbo diesel proved a concept the rest of the industry soon adopted. Allis-Chalmers' next step up, the larger standard-tread D21 of 1963, extended the turbocharging idea to a bigger engine.
